At HFS Adoption & Foster Care, we are honored to celebrate the stories of families who have grown through adoption. One such story belongs to Lorraine Wright, Ed.D., whose journey began with HFS more than six decades ago.
In 1961, Lorraine and her first husband began the journey that would define their lives in the most profound way—parenthood through adoption. At just four weeks old, their first son was placed into their arms through HFS, and in that moment, their family story began.
Over the years, Lorraine and her husband opened their hearts and their home to three more children through HFS, building a family grounded in love, resilience, and connection. To Lorraine, adoption was never just about growing her family—it was also about honoring the women who made her family possible. She often reflected on the courage and sacrifice of her children’s birth mothers, writing about them with tenderness, especially during the holidays when gratitude felt deepest.
Lorraine was blessed with the opportunity to meet two of her children’s birth mothers, moments she described as profoundly moving and deeply affirming. These connections reinforced her lifelong belief that adoption is woven from many stories and that birth parents are central to that tapestry of love.
Now at 91, Lorraine’s legacy continues to grow. With her second husband by her side, she delights in a bustling family that includes 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Lorraine remains very active in her community and loves sharing her adoption journey with others. Recently, a close friend confided in her about placing her own child for adoption—a conversation that reminded Lorraine how powerful it can be to speak openly and compassionately about adoption, and how those shared stories can bring comfort and understanding.
Her journey—spanning more than six decades—reminds us that families are not defined solely by blood, but by love, devotion, and the courageous choices that bring lives together. Lorraine’s story is a testament to the enduring beauty of adoption and the extraordinary ways it can shape generations.
